Rotary members are key players in PolioPlus, a program dedicated to immunizing all the world's children against polio. Members assist in vaccine delivery, social mobilization and work with national health care organizations such as WHO, UNICEF and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Individual club community service projects focus on family, hunger, water, health, literacy and youth service.
Rotary was founded in 1905. District 9 was formed a short ten years later in 1915. William Zimmers (Milwaukee) was the first District Governor. Over the next 76 years, through several re-districting and re-numbering processes, communities such as Duluth, Wausau, Minneapolis, Green Bay, Madison, LaCrosse, Beloit and Horicon became part our district. In 1957, under the guidance of District Governor George Markham Jr. (Oconomowoc), Rotary District 627 was formed of the cities and towns that would eventually became Rotary District 6270.
Rotary District 6270 was formed in 1991 under District Governor Frederick Luedke (Milwaukee). In 1987, women were admitted for Rotary membership in the United States. In 1998, we welcomed Angela Rester Samse of Menomonee Falls as our first female District Governor. Our tradition of strong leadership continues as a guiding force for the times ahead. As members, we volunteer our time and talent to further the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" in order to make a positive impact on our communities and the world.
